Irregular Wars - Scotland 1, Spain 0

Met up last night with Paul the Galloglaigh to try out the Irregular Wars rules. Paul fielded a Border Reiver army, intent on plunder, while I had the Spanish Expeditionary Force. The beer war Dark Lord, a great wargaming ale with Black Tom Fairfax on the label.
I started strongly, charging a company of border horse with my pikes. Then everything went wrong. I allowed my companies of shot to get involved in melees, and by the end Paul ripped a whole through my centre and surrounded my pikes and one company of cavalry. Disaster!

The rules were fun and simple, although I think there were a couple of melee rules we got wrong. We'll definitely be playing it again.

  1. Same old story-after a couple of pints the shot thought they could take on the world...they call it "Little Man Syndrome"!

  2. Nice one, want to try these rules too. Whose Reiver figures do you use?

  3. Hi Cameronian, the Reivers are a mix - pikes, shot, gun and highlanders are Essex, the horse and targeteers are West Riding Miniatures. The WRM figures looked much better on the website than they do in real life. Beware that they are incredibly flat - some of the horsemen look like they've been crushed by one of those car crushing machines. I have some Freikorps figures on the way - will let you know how they pan out.

  4. Interesting and interested. As usual I'm trying to do it on the cheap with Reivers from Warrior in Glasgow (25mm £0.50 for foot and £1.00 for mounted including the horse). The foot and riders ain't bad at all but the horses are real nags. I'll get around to prepping up some examples and post 'em. By the way, how much of a burden is keeping track of the resolve factor for each company in Irregular Wars?

  5. Oops, didn't notice you were using 15mm. The Essex should have given it away, must pay more attention in future. So we've gone in totally different directions on this one. I won't be using the Irr Wars basing either, using DBRR instead, so that my existing renaissance troops can be used. Don't think it makes a difference as it looks like Irr Wars base sizes are to fit figure numbers specified for the companies.

  6. Yeah - 15mm is not my thing, but I painted up a couple of armies so that I can use them against more opponents. I'm going to paint up some more using 1/72, and keeping the basing as DBA-RRR, especially as the new edition of the Irregular Wars rules includes gradings for Landsknechts etc. Keeping track of resolve was a bit of a pain - I used pen and paper, but got confused a couple of times when units changed positions.

  7. Looks like little plastic counters are going to be following the troops all over the place. Could use dice I suppose as only the best pike companies have a resolve of 6. Think I might use HOTT rules instead!

Anyway, onward and upward - may the dice gods favour you.
